A 21-year-old man was stabbed more than a dozen times in broad daylight Wednesday in South Delhi’s Sangam Vihar. According to the Delhi Police, the deceased, identified as Yusuf Ali, was attacked by a man he knew over a loan of Rs 3,000.

The police said they have arrested the accused who has been identified as Shah Rukh, a resident of the Sangam Vihar area.

Ali was found lying in a pool of blood in front of bookshops and the market area, hardly 200 metre from the Tigri police station.

A PCR call about the incident was made around 7.30 am Wednesday when local residents spotted the two men fighting. A video of the attack showed the accused attacking the victim repeatedly with a knife outside a bookshop on a crowded street.

In the two-minute-long video, Ali is seen trying to resist the attack but is stabbed in the chest and abdomen multiple times. Residents later intervened and stopped Shah Rukh.

Chandan Chowdhary, DCP (South) said, “We received a call in the morning about the stabbing incident and rushed to the spot. The police found both the accused and the victim lying on the ground. The accused was thrashed by the public and suffered injuries. Both were rushed to the hospital where Ali succumbed to the injuries”.

The police arrested Shah Rukh after he was discharged from the hospital.

An initial probe showed he had loaned Ali Rs 3,000 around two months ago. For the last few days, he was allegedly harassing Ali for money who had told the accused he couldn’t pay back the loan at the time. Shah Rukh had then allegedly followed Ali and attacked him on Wednesday morning.

The deceased is survived by his parents and a younger sister. His family said he had left home to drop his sister at her school Wednesday morning when he was killed. He was unemployed and was looking for a job in the hotel industry.

His father, Shahid Ali, alleged Shah Rukh had threatened to kill his son three to four days ago over the loan. “He and his associates were harassing my son. We wished we had complained. The locals had called me and told me that my son was brutally stabbed. There were around three boys who killed him,” said Ali.

“I want justice for my son. He had promised to return the money. What was the need to kill him?” he asked. However, the police said there was only one assailant who attacked Ali.
