Russian airbase in Crimea rocked by blasts

Image
A series of explosions at a Russian air and naval base have left military analysts wondering what could have struck the site, which lies far outside the range of US missiles supplied to Ukraine, including the Himars multiple rocket launcher. In June, the US supplied Ukrainian forces with the advanced, precision-guided rocket system, which American officials have said is being used to hit Russian rear area bases and logistics hubs almost 70 kilometres behind the front line. But the Saki airbase, home to Russia’s Black Sea Attack Regiment, is 220km away from the nearest Ukrainian positions in Kherson, which is in the south of the country. More Ukrainians returned home than fled to the EU in July

Image
More Ukrainians returned to their home nation than fled to European Union countries last month, border police have revealed as they said the refugee crisis had stabilised over the summer. About 1.16 million Ukrainians entered the EU in July, a similar total to June and much smaller than the estimated 4 million who arrived in the first month of the war. EU border agency Frontex said about 1.17 million Ukrainians went the other way, most of them returning to Ukraine from Poland, Slovakia, Romania or Hungary. Some people are thought to go back and forth across the border and are not necessarily returning to Ukraine for good, while others headed for safer areas in the west of the country after fighting was concentrated in the south and east. However, Frontex said the refugee crisis had the potential to worsen again. One uncertainty is the fate of the millions of people who are displaced within Ukraine and could flee their temporary home if fighting spreads. READ MORE : https://www.thenati

High oil prices offer Middle East SWFs more capital to invest in alternatives

Image
Higher oil prices are providing fresh capital to the Middle East's sovereign wealth funds to increase allocations to alternatives, a new study showed. Given that much of the regional SWFs' funding relies on state-owned oil and gas industry revenue, the crude price rally is driving new opportunities for managers to help them diversify from a reliance on commodities, research company Preqin said in the report. The eight-largest Middle Eastern SWFs collectively have more than $3 trillion in combined total assets, according to Preqin data, which is aimed at helping international managers source new capital from investors in the region. "With oil prices at highs not seen since before 2014, the region’s economic outlook is improving, but the desire to move away from reliance on oil revenues provide opportunity for private capital models to see capital invested outside the region," said Alex Murray, vice president of research insights at Preqin. Shiite Muslims in Iraq, Lebanon mark festival of Ashoura

Image
Shiites in Iraq and Lebanon chanted, paraded and beat their chests on Tuesday as they marked Ashoura, one of the most important dates on the religious calendar, commemorating the 7th century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Hussein. The symbols of Shiite piety and penitence blanketed major cities in Iraq, where Hussein was believed killed at the battle of Karbala, south of Baghdad, in 680 A.D. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people converge on Karbala, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Baghdad, to observe the solemn holy day. Shiites see Hussein and his descendants as the rightful heirs to the prophet. His killing at the hands of a rival Muslim faction embodies the rift between the Sunni and Shiite sects of Islam and continues to shape the identity of the minority branch of Islam today. Hundreds of voters lined up hours before polls opened in some locations. The top candidates are Raila Odinga, who has vied for the presidency for a quarter of a century, and Deputy President William Ruto, who has stressed his journey from a humble childhood to appeal to millions of struggling Kenyans long accustomed to political dynasties. “In moments like this is when the mighty and the powerful come to the realisation that it is the simple and the ordinary that eventually make the choice,” a smiling Mr Ruto told journalists after becoming one of the first voters. “I look forward to our victorious day.” READ MORE : https://www.thenationalnews.com/world

Real Madrid motivated ahead of Frankfurt Super Cup clash

Taiwan holds military drill as China accused of preparing invasion

Image
Taiwan held an artillery drill Tuesday simulating a defense against an attack as its top diplomat accused Beijing of preparing to invade the island after days of massive Chinese war games. China launched its largest-ever air and sea exercises around Taiwan last week in a furious response to a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the highest-ranking American official to visit the self-ruled island in decades. Taiwan lives under the constant threat of invasion by China, which views its neighbor as part of Chinese territory to be seized one day, by force if necessary. “China has used the drills and its military playbook to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan,” Joseph Wu told a press conference in Taipei on Tuesday, accusing Beijing of using Pelosi’s visit as a pretext for military action. UK home energy bills set to leap in October and January

Image
Annual UK energy bills have been forecast to hit £3,729 ($4,535) from next April, with volatility in the global gas and electricity market triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine pushing prices to record highs. British energy regulator Ofgem has confirmed that the energy price cap will be updated quarterly, rather than every six months, as it warned that customers face a “very challenging winter ahead”. Higher prices are expected to go into two-phase set of increases this winter in October and then in January as the cap is adjusted every three months. It said the change would go “some way to provide the stability needed in the energy market” and that it “isn't anyone’s interests for more suppliers to fail and exit the market.” With the UK battling a mounting cost of living crisis, changes to the price cap come as household energy bills are likely to remain at more than two-and-a-half times their pre-crisis levels until at least 2024, according to the latest predictions. Nile dam stand-off resolution ‘within reach’, says UAE

Image
The UAE believes a successful conclusion to negotiations over a hydroelectric dam Ethiopia is building on the Nile is “within reach”, according to a statement posted on the website of the Permanent Mission of the UAE to the UN. The project – known as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam – has led to a stand-off between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan. The UAE said this should be tackled in the spirit of “African solutions to African challenges”. Egypt and Sudan have complained that Ethiopia has acted unilaterally and started to fill the reservoir behind the dam on the Blue Nile. Egypt has expressed concerns that a quick filling of the reservoir will reduce its share of Nile waters, which the country depends on for its water supply. Sunak vows to focus on Islamist extremism in shake-up of 'failing' UK Prevent programme

Image
Rishi Sunak promised on Wednesday to reform what he called a failing anti-terrorism programme by ordering a greater focus on Islamist extremism, in his latest pitch to members in the Tory leadership race. Mr Sunak's campaign said the much-criticised Prevent programme was focusing too much on far-right extremists and others with muddled ideologies, rather than the Islamist extremists it said were “far and away” the greatest threat. If elected as Britain's next prime minister, Mr Sunak would reform Prevent so that “the profile of cases in the programme broadly reflects the terror threat posed to the UK,” his campaign said, without explaining how. Mr Sunak, who is battling Foreign Secretary Liz Truss for the top job, said he would expand the definition of extremism to cover those who “vilify the United Kingdom”, raising eyebrows among critics who suggested he was encroaching on freedom of speech. Allies of Mr Sunak insisted that only those with an “extreme hatred of our country”,

US president Joe Biden to sign executive order to protect travel for abortion

President Joe Biden on Wednesday will sign an executive order aimed in part at making it easier for women seeking abortions to travel between states to obtain access to the procedure. More specifically, one of the directives Biden will issue will allow states that have not outlawed abortion to apply for specific Medicaid waivers that would, in effect, help them treat women who have traveled from out of state. The order will also call on health care providers to comply with federal nondiscrimination laws and streamline the collection of key data and information on maternal health at the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The details were described by senior administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the executive order ahead of a formal announcement. Biden, who continues to isolate in the White House residence after a rebound case of COVID-19, will sign the executive order as he helps launch a federal task f

What happens next in six-week race to be UK's new prime minister?

Image
The final two candidates in the Conservative leadership race on Wednesday face an intense six weeks of campaigning to become the next British prime minister. The pair — Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss — saw off 10 other challengers with Penny Mordaunt the last to be knocked out when the race was whittled down to two in late July. They will travel around Britain undertaking two hustings a week, in which Tory members will question them forensically on their policies, plans, past actions and character. There will be further television debates, although they are unlikely to involve head to head discussions, after previous debates resulted in “blue-on-blue” skirmishes with the candidates criticising each other. The final duo will also conduct a series of interviews with local newspapers, radio stations and other outlets in an attempt to convince the Conservative Party's 160,000 members that they have the leadership qualities to become prime minister.
