Stranded beluga whale winched out of France's Seine river in rescue attempt

A beluga whale stranded for several days in the Seine river in France was hauled out in the early hours of Wednesday in an attempt to save its life. It was the first stage of an ambitious rescue operation to return it to the sea. It will now be transferred to a saltwater basin in Normandy. It was lifted from the river by a net and crane in the early hours and placed on a barge under the immediate care of a dozen veterinarian The dangerously thin marine mammal has no digestive activity for unknown reasons, conservation group Sea Shepherd France tweeted, saying veterinary exams were done after the beluga was hauled out of water after hours of preparation. Iran releases French-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah on furlough

Iran has released French-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah on furlough for five days, one day after Tehran and Washington wound up indirect talks in Vienna to revive a 2015 nuclear pact. “We hope it [the furlough] will be extended ,” her lawyer Hojjat Kermani told the Emtedad website on Tuesday, Ms Adelkhah, a resident of France, was arrested in 2019 on national security charges while on a visit to Iran and sentenced in 2020 to five years in prison. She was later moved to house arrest before being returned to jail in January. Macron arrives in Cameroon on first leg of Africa trip

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Cameroon on Monday at the start of a three-nation tour of western Africa. Mr Macron was welcomed at the airport in Yaounde at around 10:40pm by Cameroonian Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute. His first trip outside Europe since being re-elected will also take him to Benin and Guinea-Bissau, and should allow him to "show the commitment of the president in the process of renewing the relationship with the African continent", said a French presidential official, who asked not to be named. Mr Macron is due to hold talks on Tuesday morning with his counterpart Paul Biya, 89, who has ruled Cameroon with an iron fist for nearly 40 years.
