What happens next in six-week race to be UK's new prime minister?

The final two candidates in the Conservative leadership race on Wednesday face an intense six weeks of campaigning to become the next British prime minister.

The pair — Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss — saw off 10 other challengers with Penny Mordaunt the last to be knocked out when the race was whittled down to two in late July.

They will travel around Britain undertaking two hustings a week, in which Tory members will question them forensically on their policies, plans, past actions and character.

There will be further television debates, although they are unlikely to involve head to head discussions, after previous debates resulted in “blue-on-blue” skirmishes with the candidates criticising each other.

The final duo will also conduct a series of interviews with local newspapers, radio stations and other outlets in an attempt to convince the Conservative Party's 160,000 members that they have the leadership qualities to become prime minister.
